Tel-Aviv is not a big city and for a tourist that just might be what you need. Crossing from north to south in the city center will take about two hours walking. Parking is always a problem if you do not know the parking zones and secret places. Try to avoid driving and remember you are on vacation so no need to get angry while looking for parking; it might take you some time to find one.
Taxis are always a good way to travel if you do not want to walk or sweat in the summertime. Public transportation like buses and minibuses is easy and frequent in the city center. If you do not plan on leaving the city, trains might not be as helpful as the city is really too small.
TLVme.com has decided to help you better understand your options for transportation in the city. Enjoy and take care.
Taxi drivers in Tel-Aviv love tourists and some of them might talk too much so remember these rules and you will be just fine:
- Make sure they know the place you asked for.
- Make sure they turn on the meter.
- If you plan on going to Tel-Aviv's pot and there is traffic outside, ask the deicer to stop. It is better to walk a few minutes than to be stuck in traffic for half an hour and pay a lot of money for nothing.
- Make sure you do not forget anything in the taxi. Some drivers might return your belongings but only for a price (because they have to drive back).
- If you can, try and remember the name of the taxi company. This might come in handy if you need to contact the taxi driver for any reason.
- There are different fares for daytime; night and weekend so do not panic if you see the meter running faster.
- Licensed taxi stations:
Bus lines are easy and you mainly need the number 4 and number 5 in the center of the city. You can check the routes and timelines on their website: http://www.dan.co.il/english/
Some things you should know:
- If you do not know, where you should get off, ask the driver and stand next to him.
- Keep the receipt until you get to your destination. If checkup arrives, you will have to produce the receipt or pay a fine. Very rare but happens.
- Buses stop running when Sabbath starts. This means buses do not run from Friday afternoon until Saturday evening.
- Try avoiding paying with big notes, always better to have coins.
Nicknamed in Tel-Aviv as the service bus, you should try them at least once, experience guaranteed. The good thing about these minibuses is that they follow the same line as the number 4 and 5 bus lines with one difference. You can actually tell them where to stop, as they are not obligated just to stations. Great option when it is to hot or rarely, when it rains. These minibuses run also on Friday and Saturday and they end about midnight. They are very frequent. You can always find one passing every five minutes. When it is rush hour, might take a while to find a seas so be patient. Be ready when people ask you to pass money to and from the driver.
- Make sure you have small coins.
- Try sitting at the end of the minibus or you will be asked to pass money, a lot.
- Remember to tell the driver where you want to get off or the minibus will not stop.
- You can feel free to ask people for directions, it is common.
Now you are talking. Rent a bicycle, get everywhere easily, see the city like you really should.
- When renting, ask for a chain and lock. This way, you can lock the bicycle on the street.
- Ask how you should lock the bicycle and if you need a helmet.
- Ride carefully on bicycle trails and try avoiding the roads, as drivers do not like cyclists.
- Companies that rent bicycles:
Scooters and motorbikes are very common in Tel0Aviv and offer a great way to move around. Some companies rent scooters on a daily or weekly basis.
- When renting, make sure you understand the final and total price per day. Some companies might offer a basic low price that does not include the insurance or helmets.
- Never ride without a helmet. This is the LAW!
- Be careful and behave like a car on the road. Do not let the Israeli drivers tempt you to their driving style, trust us, they know what they are doing.
- Make sure the insurance includes body damages.
- You should park on the sidewalk but make sure people can pass and you are not disturbing anyone.
- Do not park on the boardwalk unless allowed. Fines are handed out and put on the bikes.
